President Donald Trump says his wife, Melania, will be released from the hospital in a few days after receiving treatment for a kidney condition the White House says is noncancerous.

But the 48-year-old former model is expected to stay in hospital "for the duration of the week".

The White House did not offer any additional details on Mrs Trump's condition.

President Trump spoke with his wife of 13 years before the procedure and talked to the doctor after it was completed, a White House official said.

Stephanie Grisham, Melania Trump's spokesperson, said the embolization process was successful.

"Politics aside, @FLOTUS #MelaniaTrump is a mother of a young son, and even tho its routine-it was still a surgery, and I wish her a speedy recovery", said another.

President Trump is expected to visit his wife in the hospital on Monday, Grisham told CNN's Kate Bennett.

"They simply referred to it as 'a benign kidney condition, '" the reports said according to some American News outlets.

What is a kidney embolization procedure?

According to the statement, President Donald Trump remained in the White House during the first lady's surgery.

The procedure has come just a week after Melania launched the platform for her "Be Best" campaign, which focuses on the general well-being of children, as well as promoting safety around children's use of social media and helping families affected by opioid addiction.

Is Melania Trump the HOTTEST first lady ever?

The Trumps and their marriage have been under scrutiny in recent months after revelations that a porn actress was paid $130,000 in hush money to keep quiet about claims she had sex with Trump in 2006.

"There are certain benign tumors that may be treated this way".

Mr Trump has acknowledged reimbursing his lawyer for the payment to porn star Stormy Daniels but denies her allegations.

Her "Be Best" event in the White House Rose Garden reinforced the image of a first lady who is getting more comfortable in her role.

Trump was initially hesitant to shift base from NY to Washington DC since it would mean midyear changing of school of Barron, her son with US President Donald Trump.
