'Lethal Weapon' Renewed with Seann William Scott After 11th-Hour Recasting Scramble

Word broke last week that star Clayne Crawford, who plays Martin Riggs, was in line to be fired from the series owing to "bad behavior" on set.

"In Season Three, series star Damon Wayans will be joined by Seann William Scott (the "American Pie" franchise"), who will play a new character who folds into a partnership with Murtaugh (Wayans).

"Seann is a fantastic addition to this already wonderful cast", Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said in a statement.

FOX has chose to renew its action drama series Lethal Weapon for a third season, but it's not exactly that cut and dry.

Fox officially announced Lethal Weapon has been renewed for a third season.

With Wayans and Scott as new leading duo, Lethal Weapon has been renewed for a third season about 24 hours before Fox is slated to unveil its fall 2018 schedule to advertisers at its upfront presentation. It seems FOX has made a decision to do the latter, and Seann William Scott has landed his first-ever network series role. As the show got closer to cancellation, Crawford took to Instagram to apologize, but blamed his behaviour on the alleged safety hazards on set. Here's the tweet from the official Lethal Weapon Twitter confirming the renewal. The situation escalated to a point where Fox and Warner Bros. "Matt Miller, his incredible team and everyone at Warner Bros. have been tremendous partners, and we're thrilled to bring this show back for another season".

Fox's decision on whether or not to continue Lethal Weapon may potentially be made by Monday when the company presents its fall lineup to advertisers in NY. TV started exploring a recasting - a rare and dramatic move when involving a lead of an established series, especially when an iconic character like Riggs is involved. The show has averaged 5.3 million viewers and a 1.3 in the adults 18-49 demo during its second season, numbers that rise to 8.6 million and 1.7 when Fox adds in its multi-platform viewing.

Lethal Weapon is produced by Warner Bros.

Crawford's behavior had left Lethal Weapon - one of Fox's better-performing dramas - on the bubble as many connected with the series (including, Wayans, sources note) have said they would rather not work with the actor.
